The kids, they would climb up with a hammer and the adults below smiled
Rank: First Sergeant
Unit: Nahal, 50th Battalion
Area: Hebron
period: 2004 - 2005

This was a period of difficult events but the situation is that you try, as a company, to have a normal relationship with the Jewish settlement, so [during] the story with the Sharabati House it became extreme and even impossible.

What happened there? The Sharabati House is a house that one of its walls borders the playground in the center of the Avraham Avinu neighborhood, and at some point the High Court of Justice allowed one of the owners [to return].

What happened when you were there? The situation was that the inhabitants of the Jewish neighborhood decided to simply take the house down, it was very systematic. We, as a patrol, are supposed to deal with things that happen in the Kasbah, and suddenly we hear the sound of a circular saw from the direction of the house and we run immediately, chase the kids like idiots in the winter with all our clothes and (bulletproof) vests and weapons, catching them and bringing them down from the roof. The kids, they would climb up with a hammer and the adults below smiled. A moment later their mother comes out with cookies and coffee and offers us a drink, and everything's fine. You know their faces. You eat cholent at their house on Saturdays, the yeshiva is in your post, you know the people. It was impossible conduct, and slowly it increased, ultimately there was also violence. One of the commanders of another platoon actually head-butted a woman with his helmet during one of these skirmishes. Because of the inability of the police, and I don't know who already tried [to do something, but], whoever went there – got pelted with eggs and paint [filled] bags, water.

What happens when a 'blue' policeman (Israeli civil police) enters the neighborhood? One shouldn't try to enter the neighborhood. The youth are immediately on alert. It also seems like a practical matter, the adults don't do it because they could get arrested. [The youth] immediately climb onto the rooftops with all the equipment, eggs and bags with blue paint. They threw them at people, but not at us. With us the relationship was that we do our duty for the inhabitants of Hebron and they, somehow, show their gratitude – invite us to a meal, invite us on the Sabbath.

How many times did the policemen enter there? All the time. Ultimately the house became a pile of stones.
