What led you to understand or to see what soldiers who served with you really think about the Palestinians? Words were being thrown around all the time. Like, if something happened people would say something about the Palestinians. I remember something small. Sometimes they would make bonfires, it was a religious thing I think…The Palestinians?We would see because there was a gorgeous view of the entire area from the regional brigade. So we would see these bonfires. One of the soldiers who knew [about it] explained to me what these bonfires actually are, but he used words like… There was a group of soldiers who would call the Palestinians pigs and… animals, they would say, yes, they’re disgusting… But these guys that I served with, the way they talk about the Palestinians, like there was a total disconnection from the fact that these are human beings who have relationships with people and emotions. I think I felt confused because… there was one soldier who was very, very nice, he would never speak like that to anyone he knew or to a friend or family member, and he doesn’t look like someone who would even speak in language like that. And then, suddenly, when he would talk about the Palestinians he would start throwing in strong words. He was, he probably still is, a really nice guy… Logical, or that’s how it seems. He was able to dehumanize them and disconnect his humanity from theirs with total ease, and saw them only as an enemy. And that’s why they’re not, they can’t have a form of existence that’s similar to his. And I felt… Most of the time I felt very confused and frustrated, because I didn’t know what to do with this. I guess I started to feel hatred toward the soldiers who were with me on the base… because I didn’t know. I didn’t know how to respond. I didn’t have the confidence and I felt very uncomfortable because they all felt that way, they had a lot of hatred for the Palestinians.
