There were patrols to make a show of presence. There were places where even at two o’clock in the morning, I remember riding in the company command jeep with the company commander and driver up front. The commander gives me a stun grenade, here you go. Two a.m., in the middle of the street.

And he tells you to throw it?Yes.

Just like that?For practice. The point was to demonstrate presence.

Meaning?Driving through certain places at certain times of the day and night, and do high-intensity activity. Which includes, for instance, sometimes throwing stun grenades at night, or sometimes you have to shoot blanks at certain places, not in the middle of a village, but, you know… show your presence.
