So why break the silence? I understood, after my military service that if the truth isn't on the side of your ideology, then maybe you need to fix something about your ideology. And here we have a system, sponsored by the state, sponsored by all of us, we all take part, a system of repression of people, by force and violence in order to achieve this anachronistic biblical fantasy of a Jewish kingdom in Judea and Samaria or in Israel. People with values and ideology, who really come to serve and defend, are being exploited to enforce this ideology, enforce this system. My country has lost its way completely. We're just going around in cycles of bloodshed and violence and it won't end until people understand that they're responsible for what their state is doing, and what the implications are, what the real face of the Israeli settlements in Judea and Samaria is, and the general system of repression in East Jerusalem, which happens five minutes from their homes, people don't have rights. We're very good at waving around our democracy, and [being a] villa in the jungle, and the most moral army in the world, but nobody really enters the thick of things, and the mere panic it creates in people, to hear people speak about their service in a way that isn't ideologically motivated, proves how we can't handle our actions as a state. There's no willingness to think about what will happen tomorrow, what will happen to our children, or our grandchildren. We just take it for granted that yes, so I'll send my kid to the army and he'll carry out arrests and slap around a few Arabs and that's the price of living here. It's not the price of living here. It’s the price we determine for living here the way in which we live. And I just want the public to know the truth about what it sent me to do, how it affected me as a person, how it affected the people who were the victims of my violence, and for people to start thinking about why it's so hard for them to hear Breaking the Silence’s interviews, why it's so hard for them to believe you're not distorting interviews and not lying, why they have to believe that you're anti-Semites who receive your salaries in Euros. What does it awaken in them? What is… like, the dark secret that they don't want to touch? If you ask someone what he thinks about Judea and Samaria, the associations of Judea and Samaria, he'll think of kids with tiny sidelocks (Payot) with large yarmulkes running around on green hilltops and everything is nice and pastoral and shepherds as if we're King David in the bible. And they don't understand that what’s behind these images is a military occupation, and it doesn't matter if you don’t like the word 'occupation,' because it has its associations with – I don’t know what, it's a system of military control over people who aren’t interested in our rule. They don't want it, they don't consider it legitimate and they want to realize their rights to determine their own governing system, and they take the best of the youth, the guys who most want to enlist and be Zionist poster boys and the title and to go on with their Israeli pride and patriotism, and they use them, and exploit all their values and education to make them blind to what they're really doing, which is violently repressing an entire nation. And to think that all that violence can be kept in a bubble, and kept away from our society, that's either dumb or a lie. It's like not… it can't be anything else. It can't be that we can wrap this entire bubble of violence in some nylon, or something sterile, and won't let it reenter our society. There’s generation after generation here that’s educated, really educated, in occupation. And that's the failure of the education system, and that's our failure as a state to really open our eyes, and it's important for me to make my voice heard, so that people will know. And it's also important to me that in future generations, people will know that not everyone was caught in this concept of enlightened occupation and the most moral army in the world and the only democracy in the Middle East. That there were people who saw it and tried to resist and tried to end it one way or another. That's it, more or less.
