Having emigrated to Israel from the UK at the age of 18 after years of being taught that Israel must be defended at all times, Joel joined the IDF in 2012 and was drafted to the Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories unit, a branch of the army which deals with the bureaucracy involved in controlling millions of Palestinians under military rule. The things he saw and took part in during his service made it clear to him that the occupation is a moral travesty and must be brought to an end.
