The directive was: you can’t shoot rubber bullets [from] under 50 meters. It was at the discretion of the commander, I believe there were commanders who also shot from less. Once I shot, at one of the demonstrations there was a hill which had reached the height of the wall (the Separation Barrier), right next [to it], they put me there with another soldier with a rifle adapter (which enables a rifle to shoot rubber bullets or grenades) and they )the Palestinians( stoned [us]. Some 20 people are throwing rocks at me for an hour. The helmet protecting my face broke from all the stones I took. And they also injured the soldier that was with me. I was constantly complaining, I told them to help me, that it doesn’t make sense, that I’m being stoned there. I got on the two-way radio. So then the battalion commander came to see what’s going on, he got up on the balcony, was there for no more than a split second and told me: I want rubber [bullets] on everyone, shoot rubber [bullets] at whoever is throwing [stones] at you. He didn’t tell me exactly at who. I understood from him that I could shoot at anyone I want as far as he was concerned.
Your battalion commander? My battalion commander, yes. I didn’t want to shoot. It was scary. Obviously the right thing to do – I say this today – is to just get down from there, yeah? But he also told me you’re staying here. He came and told me you’re staying here. I didn’t want to fight with him, I didn’t have the energy to complicate things so I stayed there and shot rubber bullets at all kinds of people. I hit some, others I didn't hit.
What were the instructions?
You aim at the lower body, with these rubber [bullets]. It’s an imprecise weapon after all. It’s a very slow weapon so we hit a few. Those we hit just fell to the ground. At what range approximately did you shoot? The person we hit I think was [at] 60 meters. The borderline range – 60, 70 meters. There was a senior commander, from my company, he was responsible for those who were shooting the [tear] gas. He saw that I was shooting rubber [bullets] and it riled him up. So right after the demonstration dispersed and I was still there he came over and said to me: Get down, get down from here, and took my weapon with the rifle adapter and started randomly shooting at people. Who were not throwing stones? Yes.
After the demonstration was over? When it was in the process of dispersing. For example he tried to hit the guy we had already hit and was limping and he tried to hit him. What was he, a platoon sergeant? A sergeant, yes. He also brought with him another soldier from the fireteam cell and they also just shot [tear] gas there.
