Maintaining the riot
Rank: First Sergeant
Unit: Nahal, 50th Battalion
Area: Nablus area
period: 2012 - 2013

Joseph’s Tomb has an entrance for settlers, it’s an organized entry with buses. Everyone wants to get a spot on these buses, they try to load more people than is possible on these buses. There’s a [military] convoy that enters before the buses, and the buses enter and do what they do. They reach the tomb, pray, have a celebration and leave with a convoy that accompanies [them[. There was a bus that was simulating an entry into Joseph’s Tomb with soldiers inside, the plan was that it was soldiers not in uniform. Because every time there is an entry into Joseph’s Tomb a riot forms at a certain junction, [we] want to stage an entry into Joseph’s Tomb, a bus that is supposedly entering Joseph’s Tomb with the whole convoy. We want the riot to form, we want to keep it going there in order to try to see who the inciters are. There’s a force situated on the other side of the junction that is supposed to see this and catch them. I was on the side of maintaining the riot. What does it mean to maintain a riot?Riots happen and there are all kinds of riot dispersal means. They throw stones, you throw a tear gas grenade, they disperse for a short time and come back and throw stones and you throw a tear gas grenade. Ultimately this business ends when the military gets into its vehicles and drives away from there. In this specific case we came to spur a riot, the whole entry into Joseph’s Tomb is intended to arouse the riot. On that specific night we arrive and there are a few people who are throwing a stone here, throwing a stone there, not too much is going on, someone says “Okay, let’s shoot a grenade inside.” They’re throwing stones there so we can shoot a tear gas grenade. There aren’t exactly procedures for when these things are used because it’s a kind of judgment, it’s not something harmful. In this specific case the aim is to rouse the area in order to find out who the people are.

Did they find someone?I wasn’t on the side that finds it, but there weren’t any impressive results.
