Someone who didn't walk quickly enough was urged along with the butt.
Rank: Major
Unit: Reserves
Area: Bethlehem area
period: 2002

One of our assignments was to deliver detainees, I don't even remember why, from one place to another and we did it on foot because in Bethlehem you can't reach every location with a vehicle. The place where the detention center was, where they gathered them for the Shin Bet Security Service interrogation, was a place you had to reach by foot. There was one soldier who wanted to check if detainees could run while roped up so a detainee was handcuffed with a white, military zip tie, blindfolded, and they were led [by the soldiers]. Now they're usually led, like, back to back, touching each other and walking straight, led by a soldier, except one [detainee] who was tied up with a rope and ran.

This issue of beating up detainees or abusing them in all sorts of ways, was that something that happened a lot? That's usually the behavior of regular soldiers. Beatings, violence, and abuse, the problem was mostly with the young soldiers. They're doing reserve duty for the first or second time, and they're still in the regular service mindset, they come with the behavior of the units they served in.

How was that manifested? It was manifested by beating with rifle butts, it was manifested by pulling them with a rope, it was manifested by pushing them when there's no real reasonor pinning them to the wall violently.

What happened, for example, with the [rifle] butt? Someone who didn't walk quickly enough was urged along with the butt.

And all these things, they’re already with you, they're already handcuffed. They're handcuffed. You're with a weapon, it's not someone who's struggling against you, it's someone who isn't walking fast enough in your opinion, or you're just taking your nerves out on him for being already in the third week of your reserve duty, and so on and so forth.
